Chapter 24

With the arrival of Gerd and Egil at the Royal Castle, the Snow Panthers were together again after spending some time apart. This filled them all with joy and provided a bit of peace. Nilsa had reserved the same large room they always shared. The other Rangers were already calling it “The Eagles’ Nest” and no-one dared go in. They were undisturbed. For a while now they had been treated with great respect, which the Panthers really appreciated. Still, they never forgot they were all Rangers and therefore comrades.

The Tower of the Rangers was as crowded as the whole city since, following the King’s orders, Gondabar had summoned all the Rangers who were not in key posts watching the Shelter, the Camp, the mountain passes to the north, and the borders. As it was impossible to have all the Rangers in the Tower—two large barracks and a canteen had been built behind the Royal Castle, outside the walls on the plain on the north side. Most of the Rangers rested and slept there. Only those who had been assigned to the Tower did so inside the castle.

Nilsa had intercepted Egil and Gerd at their arrival and had led them to the room after giving them many hugs; she was happy to see them safe and sound.

“I’m so happy to be back in this room with all of you,” Gerd said, beaming as he stowed his things in the chest at the foot of his bed.

Egil was hugging his friends amid smiles and laughter.

“It’s an indescribable pleasure to be back. I’ve missed you in such a way that I can’t express with just mere words.”

“We’ve missed the two of you a lot,” Lasgol said as he hugged Egil hard and then went on to hug Gerd.

“You’re just in time, things are moving fast with the Wedding,” Astrid told them, hugging them tight.

“More than fast, I’d say. This is going to be a nightmare,” Ingrid said, coming over and hugging them affectionately.

“Nothing like a Royal Wedding to liven things up at the Court,” Nilsa was smiling eagerly, making her freckles dance around her face.

Viggo muttered something unintelligible, then went on to say, “I’m not at all happy to see you, the room is already crowded and we barely have space to move. Besides, now I’ll have to listen to the endless explanations of the know-it-all that no one understands.

“And on top of that we can’t sleep with the giant’s snores, that are like thunder in a winter storm,” Viggo complained.

“We’re happy to see you too,” Egil replied. “Gerd, why don’t you give him a bear hug to show him how much we appreciate his company?”

“That’s a fantastic idea!” Gerd cried and went to hug Viggo.

“Don’t you dare put your paws on me, you brainless semi-giant!” Viggo protested as he attempted to escape Gerd’s hug, but everyone knew he did not really intend to avoid him. He let himself be caught and Gerd lifted him off the ground.

“Oh, how I was looking forward to giving you one of these hugs,” Gerd was twirling, delighted.
